As you will be aware our first team were involved in a tight finish on 2nd April marking the end of the winter season, we're pleased to announce that they have won the top division in NW Kent.
Below is a summary of the evening that many attended to support the team amongst such a thrilling evening by first team captain Jonny Powell:
Tunbridge Wells Men’s first team have won the NW Kent Premier Squash League. It went down to the wire as we went into the last match of the season top of the table by just 2 points, with perennial winners Dulwich, hot on our tails. We needed 16pts from a possible 17 for a mathematically certain victory – a tall order against a very strong Bexley team.
Pete Higgins (deputising for the injured Jolyon Head) put in a sterling performance at 2 against the in form Dylan Roberts. Pete won the first two and threw every trick shot imaginable at the third. Several match balls and a lot of puff later, Pete succumbed to Dylan’s persistence and lost the third before ultimately going down 3-2.
Meanwhile, on Picton, our number one string, Noah Meredith, made light work of the talented Chris Tomlinson, securing a precious 3 points. Following Noah at 3 was James McMeckan. Having recently returned from an ankle injury, James had a very tough fixture against Scotland international Calum Reid. Calum was sharper than James on the night and won the match 3-0.
Last on was captain Jonny Powell, in what should have been a straight forward encounter. Jonny tried to hack is way into the match and lost the first game in a nervy exchange. A robust team talk from Pete saw Jonny gain control and impose himself on the match and win the next 3 games comfortably. A solid performance form which Tunbridge Wells gained 13 points.
Fortunately, Bromley Sports managed to turn over Dulwich on home soil so TW emerged victorious by a margin of 9 points.
All in all an incredible season for Tunbridge Wells. Big thanks to all the players who filled in when we were short, every game won contributed to the end result and the simple act of turning up prevented what could have been crucial points being deducted. Thanks also to Paul McLeod for organising a crowd for the last two home matches and whipping them up into a frenzy!
