Congratulations to Streett Marburg and Simon Hall for winning the Vintage and Handicap tournaments.
First up was the 2017 Vintage final with Streett taking on tournament organiser Brian Hunt.
Brian came out of the blocks well with a fiercely fought first game, with numerous handouts and 40 points being played, nicking it 9-7. In the 2nd Streett showed us all a master class in the backhand drop shot wining point after point with that perfectly executed winner at the front left corner; he took that game 9-3 and the 3rd 9-3. Then at 7-2 up in the 4th it looked all over. However, Brian had different plans. He started to find the perfect length and pulled back to 8-8, having saved numerous match points. Then Streett played the shot of the match, a cross court drop shot from behind the service line to take the initiative and then the match itself 10 - 8.
The 2017 Handicap final, saw new member Simon Hall (-30: a rather generous handicap) take on Stefan Zoltowski (-50). With only one box between the players, the -20, 0 starting position was always going to be tough for Stefan. The first game started with hard hitting and very long rallies. Stefan dominating the tee, hitting excellent lengths, but Simon retrieving everything, demonstrating great movement and fitness. The first game went to Simon without Stefan getting to zero. The second game started fast and furious and Stefan started to find his touch closing the gap to 7 points, but Simon's speed around the court and incredible retrieving meant Stefan needed to go tighter and tighter. Simon took the second game 15-8 and with it the Handicap trophy.
A great evening of squash.
Thanks again to Brian for organising the tournaments, an excellent evening of squash and well done again to Streett and Simon.
