Dear Member We have arranged for CPR & AED (Automated External Defibrillator) training to take place this coming Friday at the club. AED's are used to treat Ventricular Fibrillation (VF), the most most common cause of Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA). Ventricular Fibrillation is a chaotic quivering of the heart muscle that prevents the heart from pumping blood and many victims have no warning signs or symptoms. The only effective treatment for VF is defibrillation. Heart and circulatory disease claims around 200,000 lives each year. Many could have been saved if a defibrillator was made available. A casualty’s survival rate will dramatically increase if an AED is available and if you have appropriately qualified personnel to use it. The AED treats Ventricular Fibrillation by sending a shock across the heart to enable the heart to regain its normal rhythm. AED's are portable, battery operated devices that are easy to use. The AED has voice prompts which guide the user through the process and informs the user if and when to send a shock to the heart. The AED should be used to treat someone you think may be a victim of Sudden Cardiac Arrest. A person in SCA is unresponsive when shaken and is not breathing normally. If in doubt, apply the pads and follow the voice instructions - it will NOT function unless necessary. On Friday 3rd February we have an authorised trainer from Sirius visiting the club between 7pm and 8pm to demonstrate Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and the HeartStart AED. There will also be the chance to answer any questions you may have and the opportunity to practice CPR on a dummy. The hope is that the AED is never required to be used but may prove invaluable should any member suffer a cardiac arrest whilst at the club. The club will also be providing some cheese and nibbles following the training. We hope to see you there. Many thanks. Committee
