Update - Court Heaters

Dear Members

We have received feedback from some members and want to assure you that work is still being undertaken on the court heating to find the set up that gives appropriate heat at the right times. But in addressing the matter there are a few challenges that are more difficult to resolve e.g the age of the building and its limited insulation.

The new heaters have both an ambient temperature setting, that the heaters seek to maintain 24/7, and a boost temperature, that the heaters bring the courts up to when the blue button outside each court is activated. We recently discovered there was a fault in the thermostat on B Court which meant the boost heating was running continually, that has now been rectified. Unfortunately, a knock-on effect of the faulty thermostat was that the ambient temperature setting was then too low, so that when the repair was undertaken the courts became cold. We have now reset the ambient temperature to 15C and the boost to 20C, which is the England Squash recommended range for courts.

We have blocked some of the external air vents in A and Picton to reduce the air flow and allow us to maintain a more stable temperature on the courts. We will however need to monitor how this impacts the ventilation of the courts to ensure we don’t then have a condensation problem.

We will be installing digital thermometers/hygrometers on each of the courts to allow us to better understand how the heaters respond to specific changes e.g when the boost heating is activated. In January we will be installing 24/7 timers that will allow us to completely turn off the heating (ambient and boost) overnight to reduce costs. Additionally, we are hoping to be able to link the heating boost to the court booking system so that the courts can automatically receive boost heating in the period prior to and during a game, but the practical implications of that has yet to be assessed.

Any feedback on the changes being made is always welcomed. This is best submitted via the “Suggestion Box” on the club website.
