Junior Squash and Coaching
Children of all ages can benefit enormously from playing squash and racketball. It provides an excellent outlet for their boundless energy and enables them to appreciate the discipline of learning a sport and to understand the social demands of the game.
Junior squash coaching takes place during school term-time at the following times:
Friday afternoons between 5pm and 7pm:
- Bronze from 5pm to 6pm
- Silver and gold from 6pm to 7pm
Sundays between 11am and 1pm:
- Bronze from 11am to 12pm
- Silver and gold from 12pm to 1pm
The sessions caters for children between the ages of 7 and 18 and of all abilities.
The Friday session is free of charge to members. The Sunday session is £5 (£7 for a trial sessions for non-members). All juniors must be members to take part in the coaching – this is important for insurance reasons.
Our aim is to develop junior squash players technique and skills and let them experience competitive sport; many of the children go on to play in the club's junior teams. The children are guided through a proper warm-up by participating in a range of fun, non-racket based activities before embarking on more formal drills that aim to develop the full range of shots. Practice matches then allow the children to apply their newly acquired techniques and skills in a competitive environment.
Our Head Coach is Zeb Young. Zeb is a Level 2 squash coach who coaches adults and juniors of all levels. He is the coach at Limpsfield Squash Club (near Oxted). Zeb has put in place an excellent junior programme there and has coached a number of Kent and Surrey County Junior Squash champions. He once reached number 15 ranking in England and has played racketball as well as squash at a county level. He also coaches racketball.
Zeb is supported by Nick Joughin, a Level 1 squash coach who has played on the professional circuit, and Noah Meredith who is also a Level 1 coach and has played as a British Junior.
West Kent Junior Box League
TWSRC's juniors are encouraged to play competitive squash in the West Kent Junior Box Leagues which are held monthly at one of the participating clubs, Limpsfield, Knole Park, Poult Wood, St John's and TWSRC. This allows the juniors to play all of their box matches in one session against players of a similar standard to themselves. See http://www.squashlevels.com/boxes.php?action=show_boxes&boxid=204. This was started in March 2015 and has been a roaring success and has allowed players of all abilities, from county standard to complete beginner to compete.
